Proclamation Blended Irish Whiskey hit the shelves here in Ireland last week and was officially launched July 31st with stock available through well known whiskey retailers like Celtic Whiskey Shop and Irish Malts and you’ll be able find it on shelves in your local Super Valu, who continue to expand their ever growing selection of Irish Whiskeys.

The official notes and make up of the whiskey are below so I’m just going to get straight to the point and tell you what I think about it!

Glass used: The Tuath

ABV: 40.7% One could say it’s a strange number to settle on but I can only assume it’s what they felt worked best.

Nose:  I’m fighting a cold here today but still picking up some nice notes. There is caramel/toffee straight away and this moves on to sweet notes of lemon and I get reminded of the hard boiled sweets I had as a kid on holiday

Palate: There is a nice mouth coating, but for me I’d like it to cling on a little longer. Fruit and toffee notes continue from the nose. There is nothing overpowering on the palate and it’s quite enjoyable.

Finish: I would say it’s warm, but short. The official notes say ‘overwhelmingly smooth’ and I would agree with that. This could definitely be a whiskey one could as a introduction to the category as there is nothing to big or bold

Overall: Pleasant all round really and an easy sipper, as they say. Would happily sit on my shelf.

Proclamation Blended Irish Whiskey has some really good points going for it. At only €35 it’s well priced, the packaging is very eye catching and I can see a lot of people being drawn to it on the shelf. The whiskey itself is very approachable and there is nothing to overpowering from the ABV to the notes on the nose and palate. I think it will find it’s place in the market and when launched in the US ( later this month ) it will do very well.

So, they are my thoughts on it.

Below is the official press release and tasting notes:

JULY 31st , 2020: Proclamation Blended Irish Whiskey, a new Irish whiskey blend created from the finest Irish grain and malt whiskeys, has launched in Ireland. Triple distilled and aged in new American Oak, Proclamation Blended Irish Whiskey is a singularly smooth whiskey of complex character with a refined, clean taste. Matured in bourbon casks, the blend includes a touch of sherry finished malt to give a rounded, toasted finish.

The idea for Proclamation Blended Irish Whiskey was originally conceived to
honour the history of and the people behind the birth of the 1916 Proclamation.
“We wanted to celebrate Ireland’s independent spirit through a quality Irish
whiskey, one that also tells the story of some of the unsung heroes of this time.
Proclamation Blended Irish Whiskey pays tribute to the three printers of the
Proclamation, William O’Brien, Michael Molloy and Christopher Joseph Brady
and acknowledges the important role they played during a hugely significant
time in Irish history,” says historian, author, and publisher Mícheál Ó Doibhilín.
The design reflects the physical attributes of the original document. As the
printers had insufficient type to print it all at once it had to be printed in two
parts. The label includes blind embossing, while fonts were specially redrawn to
emulate those of the Proclamation, such as the spurious ‘e’ that features in the
original document.

Speaking about the launch, Managing Director Stephen Cope said “We have worked with
our team of spirits experts, some of Ireland and the world’s leading technical specialists,
craftspeople and spirits professionals. From the concept, historical reference and labelling through to the blending and creation of the finished liquid, this whiskey has been expertly crafted through collaboration. This is a beautifully presented whiskey, an original Irish blend of singular taste and exceptional quality, one we are proud to bring to market.”

Proclamation Blended Irish Whiskey has been handcrafted for distinctive character and
complexity, matured to perfection in expertly selected casks for depth of flavour. Tasting
notes reveal an abundance of fruit and creaminess with a mellow finish:

TASTING NOTES

NOSE: First to be revealed is ripe Williams pear, followed by an abundance of apricot and crème brulée notes. Slowly developing through to rich custard, freshly brewed cappuccino and ending with woody notes.

PALATE: Front loaded notes of toasted brioche, freshly baked pastry and overtones of
macerated yellow fruits. Fusions of tannins on the mid-palate with a robust yet rounded
finish.

FINISH: Overwhelmingly smooth and creamy with a mellow finish, with hints of toasted
cereal.

Available from the end of July, Proclamation Blended Irish Whiskey is initially available in a bespoke, fully recyclable tube that has been specially developed for the launch and includes an illustration of the then Sackville Street (O’Connell Street). Available in selected SuperValu stores nationwide and leading online retailers, including The Celtic Whiskey Shop, Irishmalts.com and WineOnline.ie, retailing at €34 RRP.
